Though he is soon to be finished with his role as Tyron Lannister in Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage won’t be leaving the realm of fantasy quite yet.
A recent report by Variety has revealed that the 49-year-old actor will star in and produce a film based on the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale.
The project is currently in development by Sony, with the script being penned by Patrick Ness and Karen Rosenfelt, with Matt Smith, David Alpert, David Ginsberg and Josh Weinstock also producing. Dinklage and Ginsberg will produce through Estuary Films.
It should be noted that the film is currently in deep development and is a long way off at this point. However, it is a priority for Dinklage and the studio.
There have been no solid plot details surrounding the proposed film, but the fact it centres around the mythical Rumpelstiltskin character tells us a lot from the get-go. In the traditional tale, a miller lies to a king, telling him that his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king shuts the girl in a tower where she will spin straw into gold by morning –Â or else, face a beheading.
Of course, the girl can’t really spin straw into gold. But then, an imp appears (Rumpelstiltskin) who says he will spin the straw into gold in exchange for her necklace. Little does the girl know this is only the start of the creature’s bargaining.
As is the case with such long-lasting mythological characters, the story of Rumpelstiltskin has been told in many variations. The most recent and notable example is the version played by Robert Carlyle in ABC’s Once Upon A Time.
Another thing to note is that the Carlyle version was reworked into a more modernised character that existed in the storybook world and the modern ‘real-life’ world and dabbled in more dark magic than was described in the original fairytale. Therefore, as is the case with many Hollywood adaptations, it’s reasonable to expect a twist on tradition.
