Former Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, who portrayed Tyrion Lannister on the HBO drama, has found his latest project. Dinklage is slated to star in Legendary’s upcoming reboot of The Toxic Avenger.
The news was first reported by Deadline, who confirmed that Dinklage is set to play a role in the reboot. Unfortunately, filming dates are still to be announced. At the moment, we do not know who exactly Dinklage will portray.
Beginning in 1984, The Toxic Avenger was a cult franchise that twisted the superhero genre. The first movie did this with a budget of just 500,000. Following Melvin Junko (Mark Torgl), it shares the events of when he falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a monster. The franchise had something of a successful run in theatres, spawning several sequels, including The Toxic Avenger Part II, The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.
Movies aside, it had a pretty successful run in other mediums as well. The Toxic Avenger has seen a cartoon series and a series of comic books published by Marvel. There was even a stage musical adaptation in 2008! Dinklage is no stranger to comic book things. He has previously made appearances in both Avengers: Infinity War and X-Men: Days of Future Past!
The movie reboot will be directed by Macon Blair, who made his directorial debut in 2017 with I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore.
A reboot has been in the works since 2010, but things have been moving more quickly since Legendary Entertainment attained the rights in 2018. Legendary has produced many top movies such as Godzilla, Jurassic Park, Crimson Peak, and Krampus. The Toxic Avenger is in good hands. Signed on as producers are Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who directed the original movies. Legendary’s Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will also produce.
This movie marks yet another fantastic role for Dinklage post-Game of Thrones. He has several projects in the works, including the new animated sequel The Croods II: A New Age.
