The anticipated “Ratoidvania” title from developer Petoons Studio has partnered with international publisher PQube to bring Curse of the Sea Rats to players next year. After the superbly successful Kickstarter campaign that saw close to 6,000 backers, the studio sprung into action to finalize development. In effect, Petoons established a partnership with PQube to bring the title to PC and console in 2021.
Setting Sail Soon for Petoons
Curse of the Sea Rats follows the pirate misadventures of four heroes who are transformed into rats. Due to the witchcraft and villainy of Flora Burn, our heroes embark on a quest to turn back the spell and end her reign of majestic hell. Set on the Irish coast in 1777, the 2D/3D sea adventure features fantastic hand-drawn animation inspired by the golden era artistry of Disney and Don Bluth. The non-linear title will also provide multiple endings to encourage players to sail the sea their own way.
Petoons Studio’s initial game was interestingly called Petoons Party, a colorful party game that squared up four players to engage in a variety of mini-games. The game didn’t receive much attention; while on the other hand, Curse of the Sea Rats seems to attract many fans – even without having an official release date.
PQube is an international publisher known for distributing a wide array of indie titles. Some of their well-known games include Cat Quest, Cat Quest II, Inertial Drift, and The Unexpected Quest.
Plans are already in-store for Curse of the Sea Rats to release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Coupled with finding a publisher, Petoons Studio will be taking advantage of next-gen hardware as well for the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The game will be arriving sometime next year, though no official release window was given. In the meantime, you can join the Curse of the Sea Rats Community on Discord to stay in touch with fellow rat pirates.
