The Planet of the Apes franchise is coming back to Marvel. The publisher announced that new stories within the ape-dominating universe are coming early next year. The franchise has a deep history with Marvel that spans over 40 years. A new generation of comic enthusiasts will now experience the legendary science-fiction series.
Planet of the Apes History With Marvel
This is not the first time Marvel has published a Planet of the Apes comic story. The franchise kicked off with the release of 1968’s Charlton Heston-led film The Planet of the Apes. Shortly after, Marvel began publishing stories set within the ape-ruling world. Then, in 1975, the publisher produced the comic adaptation of Adventures on the Planet of the Apes.
In announcing the news of the comic return to The Planet of the Apes, Marvel shared a teaser image. The image, created by Salvador Larroca, pays homage to the classic ape design from these early 70’s films. While details on what this new iteration of the franchise will look like are scarce, the throwback style hints at a continuation of those stories.
What Else Do We Know?
While details on titles, collections, reprints, and creative teams are unknown, Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski teased what to expect. For starters, they are thrilled to welcome The Planet of the Apes “back to the House of Ideas.” While things are still in the works behind-the-scenes, Cebulski did hint at what this new saga will look like. According to them, it will “explore the limits of what this beloved franchise has to offer.” This is done through “bold comics storytelling.”
While there is not much to go on, the fact that the folks behind the comic series are excited to be “setting foot on this new adventure” bodes well. Fans can rest easy knowing that the comics are in the capable hands of folks who love the franchise.
