Hrm… There are definitely some good ones there, but call me crazy if I’m a bit underwhelmed with the full, twenty game list included in the PlayStation Classic. We already knew of five – Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms – which is a pretty solid selection. Courtesy of the PlayStation blog, we know know the full list of games that will be available on the PlayStation Classic. Check it out:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Jumping Flash
- Ridge Racer Type 4
- Tekken 3
- Wild Arms
- Battle Arena Toshinden
- Cool Boarders 2
- Destruction Derby
- Grand Theft Auto
- Intelligent Qube
- Metal Gear Solid
- Mr Driller
- Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
- Rayman
- Resident Evil: Director’s Cut
- Revelations: Persona
- Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
- Syphon Filter
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
- Twisted Metal
Absolutely, there are some really good ones there. I spent a lot of time as Mr. Grimm in Twisted Metal, and other games like Oddworld, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil are true classics. Other selection are kind of oddballs, like Puzzle Fighter and Destruction Derby, but it seems like there’s some real filler on the PlayStation Classic.
The original Grand Theft Auto and Rainbow Six? They have some name recognition, but are these truly representative classics? And there are some real oddball selections in there – Intelligent Qube, Cool Boarders 2? Not to say these weren’t great games, but I’m sure we all have some ideas of what could make the PlayStation Classic more of a must buy.
Regardless of the quality on display, it seems as if the “retro console” fad started by the NES and SNES Classic is not going anywhere anytime soon. It’s already tough to find preorder copies of the PlayStation Classic which is scheduled to release December 3rd for $99.99. In addition to these twenty games, it will come with two controllers – essential to enjoy games like Tekken 3 and Puzzle Fighter.
Edit: The Japanese PlayStation Classic game list is a bit different from the US version, but with a lot of similar beats. Here is the Japanese list:
