Celebrate Over 1000 Pokemon on January 15!
Japanese variety show PokeDoko will be releasing a special video on January 15, 2023, to celebrate the series surpassing over 100o total Pokemon. The show officially began airing on TV Tokyo in April 2022, focusing on travels related to the Pokemon franchise.
The special video will be a formal celebration of the now 27-year-old franchise introducing over 1000 total Pokemon, clocking in currently at 1,008, exactly as of Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. The Pokemon Company has stated that this will make the fans enjoy the series 100 times more.
At this time, the format of the video itself is unknown.
The original Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue introduced the first 151 Pokemon to the world in February 1996; since then, over 857 have been added. However, the generation of games to introduce the most Pokemon were the generation 5 set of games, Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. They introduced 156 Pokemon in total.
The Pokemon to officially surpass the 1000 milestone in the National Pokedex was the Ghost/Steel type Gholdengo, the evolution of the Ghost type Gimmighoul. Gimmighoul was teased heavily leading up to the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet via a special website posted by the Pokemon Company with an image of a chest that slowly filled up with 999 Gimmighoul Coins.
This same number of coins is needed to evolve Gimmighoul into Gholdengo in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet.
