The final region to celebrate before the Kanto Tour event begins in Pokemon GO is Johto, and it’s all happening during the Johto Celebration Event. Just like the Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova events, Johto will have its own collection challenge and other features to keep you busy over the next week. The Johto Celebration runs from Tuesday, January 26 at 10 AM local time to Sunday, January 31 at 8 PM local time. If you’re looking to take advantage of everything this event has to offer, here’s what you’ll need to know.
Johto Celebration: Spawns, Eggs, Tasks
As always, certain Pokemon will appear more frequently in the wild. For the Johto Celebration, you can expect to see more of the following Pokemon spawning: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Mareep, Hoppip, Aipom, Sunkern, Yanma, Murkrow, Gligar, Snubbull, Slugma, and Miltank. Additionally, shiny Miltank will now be activated in the game. If you’re lucky, you might find one.
Field research tasks will give rewards of Stardust and encounters with Johto Pokemon. These encounters can be the Starters, Chinchou, Mareep, Sudowoodo, or Miltank. Eggs will also have more Johto Pokemon in them during the event. Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Wooper, Tyrogue, Smoochum, and Larvitar will all hatch from 5 km eggs.
Raids
Prefer raids? Johto Pokemon will be filling up the raid pool as well. In Tier-1 raids, you’ll find the Starters, Mareep, Marill, and Larvitar. In Tier-3 raids, expect to find Togetic, Espeon, Umbreon, Skarmory, and Miltank.
Our Other Pokemon GO Guides
Throughout almost the entire duration of the Johto Celebration, from 10 AM on the 26 to 10 AM on the 31, local time, Entei will be in tier-5 raids. After that, Raikou will be the tier-5 boss until February 4 at 10 AM local time, followed by Suicune who will stick around until 10 AM local time on February 9.
Moves
You’ll be able to access some exclusive Community Day moves from 2018 during the Johto Celebration. You can evolve Bayleef into a Meganium that knows Frenzy Plant, Quilava into a Typhlosion that knows Blast Burn, Flaaffy into an Ampharos that knows Dragon Pulse, and Pupitar into a Tyranitar that knows Smack Down.
Collection Challenge
Like the other regional celebration events, the Johto Celebration features a collection challenge. Complete it to earn 15 Poke Balls, 10 Ultra Balls, and an Incense. Here are the Pokemon you’ll need to catch: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Sudowoodo, Sunkern, Murkrow, Smeargle, Miltank, and Larvitar.
The Sinnoh and Hoenn events threw curveballs into the collection challenges (requiring you to find shadow Pokemon and locking Plusle and Minun behind field research tasks, for example), so the Johto event might do the same. Remember, you can find Smeargle by taking photos of your Pokemon.
Other Info
After the Johto Celebration event finishes, there’ll be just one region left to celebrate: Kanto. The Kanto Tour is what this has all been counting down to, and it begins on February 20. Tickets are still available for purchase.
No evidence exists to suggest that any new Mega Evolutions will be released as part of this event. Ampharos, despite being a Johto Pokemon, was released in its Mega Evolved form as part of the Hoenn event.
The COVID-19 pandemic continues worldwide, so be sure to follow all local restrictions and guidelines from your government or health agencies when playing Pokemon GO. Opt for remote raids, follow all lockdown restrictions, stay home as much as possible, and wear a mask when venturing out. Good luck, and stay safe!
