Pokémon is truly having a movie renaissance, isn’t it? Not only is Detective Pikachu due to hit cinemas later this year, but it’s also rumored to be the start of a whole new film universe with an adaptation of Red and Blue to follow. But 2019 houses another gem for Pokémon fans – a CG remake of the first anime-based Pokémovie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, is coming!
But many of you will already know that. What you might not already have known is that the new trailer for the remake has been released. And the cool thing? Not only does it show Mewtwo in all his sinister glory, but also the main human cast of the feature. Yes, that’s right – your old friends, Ash, Misty, and Brock!
Check out the trailer here:
The Pokémon gang have never looked better, fully realized as they are in gorgeous CG animation. One cannot help but think of the stylistic CG of Disney’s Frozen and Tangled in this case. Yet, despite their upgrade, their appearances stay true to the original film (of which old-timers of the franchise will doubtlessly be pleased about).
The announcement for Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION (as it’s dramatically titled) came during the end credits of the movie, Pokémon: The Power of Us. The animated feature, released in 2018, gave the future film’s release date upfront – July 12th, 2019.
However, that’s in Japan. No word yet on the possibility of an international release. Maybe some dedicated Pokémon fans can petition for Veronica Taylor to reprise her role? In the minds of many, she is the one true Ash Ketchum.
The screenplay will be credited to Takeshi Shudo, who passed away in 2010. This is because Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION is a remake of the film of the same name.
This information, alongside the trailer, at least confirms that the remake will be true to the original. Older fans were disheartened when Brock and Misty were dropped from the cast in Pokémon: I Choose You! The aforementioned animated flick was a remake of the Pokémon Indigo League season.
