Next Friday, on November 15, Pokemon Sword and Shield will be released for the Nintendo Switch. Ahead of the first non-handheld (sort of) Pokemon game in years, fans can celebrate by participating in the next big Tetris 99 event. This is according to an announcement on the Nintendo Blog.
The phenomenally popular Pokemon games have been a long-time handheld only series. Now, with the Nintendo Switch, Pokemon fans will finally be able to play their games on a TV. Starting in just a few days, the 9th MAXIMUS CUP event will give players a chance to earn an in-game Pokemon theme for Tetris 99.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Tetris 99 is the online-only mashup of the classic puzzle game with the competitive multiplayer of a battle royale game. 99 players attempt to clear their Tetris boards while sending junk lines to trip up other players. As the match progresses, Tetrominoes fall faster and faster in the traditional way. However, as players are eliminated, it becomes easier for players to target more vulnerable players. This increases the difficulty even more than a regular Tetris game.
The 9th MAXIMUS CUP for Tetris 99 runs from 11 pm Pacific Time on November 7 to 10:59 pm Pacific Time on November 11. To compete, players need to play the Tetris 99 online mode during the event period. Of course, to play any online game on the Switch, players need to subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online service. As part of the event, players will earn points based on their placement in each match. Anyone who earns 100 points during the event window can earn their Pokémon-themed prize. The theme features background art, music, and Tetromino designs inspired by the upcoming Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield games.
Start getting your Tetris game warmed up to rack up those points.
