You know, I went into today’s Nintendo Direct without much to expect. I mean, I don’t exactly own a Nintendo Switch, so what do I have to be excited for? Well, there were a lot of surprising announcements as judged by both the game’s relevance and community reaction. There was one announcement though where, while it isn’t relevant for me due to the reasons above, was a shocker and should be a worthy pickup for Nintendo Switch users. That announcement was from Valve. Portal Companion Collection, a collection of both Portal and Portal 2, will be coming to Nintendo Switch later this year! You can check out the trailer below.
Portal Companion Collection, as mentioned above, brings both the critically acclaimed Portal and Portal 2 over to the Nintendo Switch for the first time. For those otherwise unaware, Portal follows the story of Chell, a mute test subject at the Aperture Science Research Labs. Guided only by a robotic AI, along with the incredibly useful Portal gun, you’ll solve plenty of puzzles to eventually get yourself the promised cake. Or will you? Well, that’s up to you to find out.
While I never saw this coming, bringing Portal and Portal 2 to the Nintendo Switch was a brilliant call from Valve. While it does have some darker moments to it, I played it as a younger kid and loved both games to death for their well-designed portals and hilarious jabs towards the protagonist herself. The sequel only intensified this love, later becoming one of my favorite games to ever release. While the idea of old games being set at full price is a bit frustrating, this is perfect for the younger generation with a Nintendo Switch to appreciate the games of old without much detriment. Given there aren’t a lot of fast-paced sequences as well, it should fit right at home. Oh, and did I mention co-op? Because that has its benefits.
Portal Companion Collection will arrive on Nintendo Switch at some point later in 2022, with a date not currently confirmed.
