The current generation of console wars has been less of a war and more of a massacre. Sony has dominated Microsoft and Nintendo thanks to the success of the PS4 and struggles of the Xbox One and Wii U. As of last month though it seems that each of the consoles are now thriving.
According to the most recent Global Lifetime Sales report by VGChartz, the Switch, PS4, and Xbox One have all seen significant sales increases from last year – especially with this being the first year for the Switch.
PlayStation 4 Monthly Sales: 3,603,646
Xbox One Monthly Sales: 2,582,648
Switch Monthly Sales: 1,814,027
Sony still sat atop the mountain during the month of November 2017, outselling the Xbox One by 1.02 million units and the Switch by 1.79 million units. Despite the current craze surrounding the Switch, the Xbox One still managed to outsell the Nintendo console by 768,621 units.
Compare these numbers to last year and you’ll see a drastic difference. The PlayStation 4 is up 352,636 units and the Xbox One is up 947,170 units. So while the PS4 managed to win out again this year, Xbox One wins the award for most improved.
Now it is time to take the total sales into account. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in November 2013, while the Switch launched in March 2017.
PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 69,635,004
Xbox One Total Sales: 34,156,108
Switch Total Sales: 9,103,150
While it may only hold eight percent of the market share, the Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling US home console of all time, and it hasn’t even been out for a year yet. Despite Xbox One’s increase, they are still nowhere near the PS4’s success, as Sony’s console has sold more than double its units.
VGChartz tracks consoles sold to consumers. Sony also announced the PlayStation 4 has sold 70.6 million as of December 3 and Nintendo announced the Switch has sold 10 million units as of December 10.
