Sony has released its Financial Results for 2021 Q2, and according to the report, Sony sold 3.3 million of its latest flagship gaming console, the PS5, between July and September this fiscal year. The 2021 Q2 PS5 sales report shows that the fastest-selling console in US history is on pace to beat sales made in the 2020 FY (howbeit because of its late 2020 release).
The company has sold 13.4m PS5s to date when including the 3.3 million. According to the report, the company recorded the same number of PS5 sales in Q2 of 2021 as it did in Q4 of 2020, the year of its release.
These sales have now contributed to a total of $5.86 billion in revenue for Sony’s gaming division, up 27% year on year, making it the best PlayStation Q2 ever recorded. The sales numbers mean Sony’s latest gaming console brought in $751m in profit for the company.
Meanwhile, as expected, PS4 sales have continued to crash, with the console selling just 700,000 units in Q1 and Q2 of 2021. This, along with the fact that the PS5 consoles were selling at a loss until August this year, meant that the Operating Profit was down 21% compared to last year. The PlayStation overall accounts for 27% of the companies total revenue in Q2 of 2021.
Meanwhile, game sales have remained consistent. The company reportedly sold 76.4m copies of PS4 and PS5 game titles in this quarter. For lifetime sales, God of War remains the company’s biggest seller, at 19.5 million copies, and Horizon Zero Dawn has sold 10m.
PS5 title Demon’s Souls has sold 1.4m copies, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold 1.2m. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, available on both the PS4 and PS5, has moved 6.5m copies. The lowest sales reported come from Returnal, which has sold 560,000 units since its April 2021’s release on the PS5.
