It’s official – Psychonauts 2 is coming and a gorgeous new trailer was unveiled at the Game Awards 2018 to remind us. The first official look at the long-awaited sequel shows off the previous game’s characters in current-gen visuals while Ford Cruller, the original Psychonaut, narrates the action.
The trailer offers little in the way of gameplay, bur rather teases us with the story. It shows newcomer Psychonaut Rasputin ‘Raz’ Aquato, the protagonist of the first game, visiting the Motherlobe for the first time. The Motherlobe is the base of operations per se for the Psychonauts. After meeting a cast of weird and wonderful characters, we are introduced to a mysterious shadowy character – probably the main antagonist.
The trailer can only be good news for fans who have long awaited Psychonauts 2. It would be an understatement to say the game’s a long time coming, since details of a sequel have ben in circulation since at least 2012. The first game sold poorly despite its critical acclaim, selling only 100,000 retail units at the time of its release.
In mid-2015, Tim Schafer, who directed the original Psychonauts 2, alongside other industry leaders, started up a crowdsourcing platform called Fig. The platform offered the option for accredited investors to fund the campaigns. Using the platform, Schafer and Double Fine Productions managed to acquire funding for development of the game, raising over $3.3 million.
As for when the game is due to be released? It’s unclear. Last year, the team at Double Fine revealed they needed to extend the release date of Psychonauts 2Â beyond its original 2018 launch window because they needed more time to finish the game.
Zak McClendon said that We do know about how long it’s going to take but we don’t want to say anything until we have a firm date for people. We want to give it time to make it something that we love and that the fans love and continues the legacy of Psychonauts 1 in a real meaningful and special way”.
Regardless, the trailer is here to fill the hole in the meantime.
