The PUBG: Battlegrounds and its mobile spin-off developer, Krafton, revealed this week that they had started working on a new game that is very different from what they are known for. The Bird That Drinks Tears, a Korean fantasy novel, will serve as the inspiration for a new game being developed by the PUBG developer.
Krafton’s New Game is Based on Korean Novel, The Bird That Drinks Tears
If the game seems familiar, that’s probably because it was initially revealed last year. We learn a little more about Krafton’s plans for this game on the website but still refer to it as an “unannounced project” because it is still without a name. Krafton says it is an ambitious project that “aims to bring the original fantasy universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears to life through its unique and refreshing fantasy races, beautiful, haunting landscapes, and gripping, immersive, and poignant stories.”
“The Bird That Drinks Tears is a novel series that was created and written by Yeong-do Lee, who is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of the Korean fantasy genre,” Krafton explains on the site. “As one of the best-selling fantasy authors in Korea with millions of copies sold, Mr. Lee is an exceptionally imaginative writer who builds elaborate worlds and fills them with complex characters.”
Krafton is looking to hire talent from across the world to help it realize its ambitious vision and collaborate with famous concept artist Iain McCraig. The Avengers, Harry Potter, and Terminator are just a few of the series that McCaig has worked on.
“The Bird that Drinks Tears is unlike any other fantasy story I have read, with fresh new ways of exploring human nature,” concept artist Iain McCraig talked about the project. “That’s what attracts me most. It’s an epic on a par with The Lord of the Rings or Dune.”
