Inside Quavo’s Tribute To The Late Takeoff At The 2023 Grammys
At the 2023 Grammys that took place on Sunday, February 5th, the American rapper paid tribute to his nephew and a fellow rapper Takeoff. The late star was also one of Quavo’s collaborators before his death. Quavo honored his co-rapper during the in Memoriam segment of the 2023 Grammy Awards. The Motorsport rapper delivered a moving performance of his song Without You and was joined by the Maverick City Music gospel choir.
Per E! News, The 31-year-old rapper rapped in front of an empty microphone stand adorned with the late Takeoff’s chain. The lyrics of the song were so emotional that they did not leave most people with dried eyes. Quavo released the track in January as a tribute to the late rapper.
Takeoff was shot outside a bowling and billiards club in Houston on November 1. According to reports, Takeoff and Quavo attended a private party at the club. After the event, an argument broke out that led to the shooting, which eventually led to the death of Takeoff.
Other Tributes At The 2023 Grammys
During the 2023 Grammys ‘in Memoriam’ section, Kacey Musgraves performed a cover of “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. The song was a tribute to late country singer, Loretta Lynn. Sheryl Crow, Mick Fleetwood, and Bonnie Raitt performed Songbird to honor Christine McVie who died on November 30.
Quavo and Takeoff’s relationship was a very heartwarming one. On November 12, in celebrating Takeoff’s life, Quavo shared a letter on Instagram dedicated to his late bandmate. In the letter, The Migos hip-hop group founder expressed how much he missed his nephew.
The rapper talked about when since both of them were kids, Takeoff always followed in his footsteps. Their bond was more than just an uncle-nephew or bandmates relationship, both of them were friends and loyal to each other. Quavo added that he loves Takeoff with all his heart and will “never leave you.”
