You may have played a few detective games at this point, but have you ever played a detective game in a world of animals? If you haven’t, Backbone aims to be your first. Today, indie developer EggNut and publisher Raw Fury have announced that Backbone will release on consoles and PC in early 2021. This will be EggNut’s first title, while Raw Fury has published many great games such as Kingdom, Dandara, and Bad North. The news was commemorated with an official reveal trailer shown on Raw Fury’s Youtube channel, which you can find here.
In Backbone, you play as Howard Lotor, a raccoon P.I. in a trenchcoat. Howard is tasked with a missing person case in an alternate version of Vancouver, British Columbia. What may seem like a routine case, though, will prove to be a daunting chase for the truth. With a lot on the line, Howard must use his detective skills and quick wits if he’s to have a definitive conclusion.
Backbone is a game that brings together both cinematic adventure and dialogue trees into one beautiful package. It isn’t a basic detective game, though, as it explores a lot of mature themes. The city is made up entirely of animals, and its species dictate the different social classes. You’ll have to be on the hunt for clues and talk to the residents if you are to find answers. If you enjoy a good mystery or are a fan of well-done pixel art, this is the game for you.
If you aren’t entirely sure about this game yet, there’s good news for you. Backbone has a demo on Steam that you can play right now, and fans already love it. The game is sitting at a 98% positive rating, with users citing some great storytelling and beautiful visuals. There’s no reason not to give it a go, especially considering that it’s free.
We’ll be keeping an eye on this hidden gem and letting you know if any more news is released. Backbone sneaks its way onto PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in early 2021. Are you going to try the playable demo? Will you be playing the game on release? Tell us about your initial thoughts, and keep an eye on The Nerd Stash for all your news, reviews, and more!
