Rage 2 was officially revealed back in May (after being unceremoniously leaked by Walmart Canada). At E3 2018, Bethesda featured the game with this epic gameplay trailer to start their show:
What is Rage 2?
Rage 2 is an action first-person shooter (developed by id Software and Avalanche Studios) that takes place in a wasteland wrecked by an asteroid. This open-world will feature no loading times and every vehicle you find throughout the wasteland is drivable. It is also a sequel to 2011ās Rage. The original was a classic case of critics clashing with gamers. While some heavily criticized the game for a multitude of reasons, most critics actually gave Rage positive reviews (You can see the reviews from IGN, GamesRadar, and GameSpot here).
Tim Willits, id Softwareās studio director, told Variety that Rage 2 will take place decades after the original. Willits confirmed that although the gameās story would continue, newcomers to the series wonāt be lost in the action.
The studio director also told Variety a bit of information regarding our main protagonist, saying:
āWe also changed the main character to be someone entirely different, and in this game the main character has a voice and can talk. You play as Walker, a character with their own past, and throughout the game Walker will mention important things about the world since āRage 1ā³, helping players remember ā or learn about ā the history of the game.ā
QuakeCon Demo
Bethesda gave us another look at Rage 2 during QuakeCon 2018 with this extended gameplay trailer:
The QuakeCon trailer showed off many of the abilities Walker possesses such as Overdrive and Shatter (along with a ānew and improved wingstickā). The new footage also gave us a look at some of the vehicle combat, which appears to be a big part of the gameplay.
Gameplay Details
Avalanche Studios is the same development team behind 2015ās Mad Max, based off of the Mad Max franchise. Bethesdaās id Software is also the masterminds of DOOM. So it shouldnāt come as a shock that Rage 2 looks to a twisted mixture of those two titles.
While the original Rage had basic multiplayer mechanics, the sequel will be a solo experience. In an interview with PCGN, Tim Willits explained why the development team steered away from multiplayer:
āright now we are focusing on just the single-player because the game is so damn big.ā
Avalanche Studios creative director Magnus Nedfors told PCGN is a separate interview that:
Ā Ā āwe are focusing on making the best single-payer story we can.ā
As you saw from the gameplay trailer above, there are several factions youāll deal with over the course of Rage 2 such as the Goon Squad, the Authority, and the Immortal Shrouded. Every one of these factions is unique in their designs, combat styles, and the vehicles they drive.
Release Date?
Rage 2 doesnāt have an official release date yet but it is expected to hit shelves in Spring 2019. You can purchase the game for PS4, Xbox One, or PC.
