When it comes to the ‘rare game console,’ there aren’t many systems to which it would apply. The first thing that comes to mind for most in my generation is the Atari 2600. But the first console ever made was the Magnavox Odyssey, even that is something many people have heard of. And these days, with the ‘retro’ takeover, remakes of old gaming systems have become relatively commonplace. This is the story of a console created after the Atari’s time was over as the main family game console.
Long ago, in the time before the console wars, the console companies had a peaceful coexistence. Before Sony officially got into the game, they created an adapter that allowed Nintendo players the ability to play Super CD-ROM format. A similar device, dubbed the Nintendo Playstation, would evolve from this device.
Rare Gaming Console at Auction
Out of all the rare game consoles, the fabled Nintendo PlayStation has to be the rarest. While there were only a few hundred made, even fewer can be tracked down. Also, if someone did, the likelihood of the device turning on is nearly nil. A few days ago, on March 6th, the rare game console sold for more than $300,000. This was a record-breaking sale of the rare game console by Heritage Auctions, with the previous belonging to an original sealed Super Mario Bros game.
Palmer Luckey, the co-founder of Oculus VR, made his own bid for the device. But the true identity of the auction winner has not been revealed, so it’s entirely possible that Luckey may have snagged it. The gaming community will have to wait and see who was lucky enough to take it home.
Would you make a bid on the device if you had the chance? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
