While the Avengers are in for a rough summer, the X-Men are thriving thanks to Marvel Comics’ Reign of X. Earlier today, the publisher unveiled their plans for new X-Men titles releasing later this year. While some of these series were announced months ago, there are a few surprises readers may not be expecting. For those who don’t know, Reign of X is the second phase of writer Jonathan Hickman’s long-term plans with Marvel Comics’ X-Men line. Hickman began spearheading X-Men comics in 2019 with the Dawn of X initiative. This initial launch began with House of X and Powers of X illustrated by Pepe Larraz and R.B. Silva respectively.
These two miniseries spun out into multiple titles including X-Men by Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu, Excalibur by Tini Howard and Marcus To, and Marauders by Gerry Duggan and Matteo Lolli. Since then, the X-Books have grown to include over a dozen ongoing and limited series since Dawn of X began.
Reign of X Marches On
This expansion continued after last year’s “X of Swords” crossover ushered the X-Books into the Reign of X displayed above. The books before July, like Si Spurrier and Bob Quinn’s Way of X and Leah Williams and Alberto Foche’s X-Corp, were no secret. Marvel has even already released preview pages for Way of X which you can view here. The surprises are what come later in the year.
With Hickman working with a mystery artist on a mystery series, Gerry Dugan is taking over the flagship X-Men title, relaunching at #1. Additionally, fans can expect Williams and Valeriio Schiti on a classified book of their own. Whether any of these series tie into the newly revealed Phoenix remains to be seen. Either way, it’s certainly an interesting time to be an X-Men fan as the Reign of X continues.
