The wait is finally over for fans to believe the horrors of Resident Evil 4 and the game remake follows the second and third games in the franchise in getting a modern update with enhanced graphics and gameplay. Video game remakes seem to be all the rage as of late. Games that are fondly remembered but with flaws are remade for the modern era with those flaws taken care of. There are tons of nostalgic games that may be hard to return to that need a modern update, and here are 10 we want to see happen.
10. Sly Cooper and the Thevius Racoonus
Like Resident Evil 4, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon earned modern updates that took those classic games to the next level. Another classic platforming character that deserves another shot is Sly Cooper. Similar to the Crash and Spyro games, Sly Cooper is a cartoony platformer that tests players’ skills in a fun, colorful world. After four games, it seems like PlayStation has forgotten the character. Outside of some cameos in other games, Sly hasn’t appeared in a game since 2013. A remake is a perfect way to reintroduce him to the public.
9. Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Mortal Kombat Trilogy takes everything great about the original three MK games and puts them into one ultimate gaming experience. To many, this collection is the best way to play the classic-era games. A remake including all of the characters and locations from this collection but with modern graphics is sure to be a hit with fans. Video game remakes, when done right, take classic games and improve on them with a modern twist. The original games in the style of the newer MK series is sure to do just that. There is even a petition from an indie studio asking Warner Bros. to allow them to make a remake.
8. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
The newer Tomb Raider games are popular with fans. The original, while undeniably classic, hasn’t aged incredibly well in terms of gameplay. This doesn’t make it bad, far from it. But younger fans who didn’t grow up with it may have a hard time adjusting to the classic PlayStation One controls. A ground-up remake using modern controls and updated graphics would be an excellent way for new fans to discover this pioneering classic.
7. Metal Gear Solid
Like Lara Croft, it may be hard for modern gamers to pick up the original Metal Gear Solid. This is a shame, as the game is nothing short of legendary. Metal Gear helped blaze the trail for stealth-based video games. While this influence shouldn’t be ignored, stealth mechanics have come a long way since the PlayStation One days. A modern update could be the definitive way to play the game if the same care that was shown for Resident Evil 4 game remake is shown here.
6. God of War
The rebooted God of War and its sequel are already known as some of the greatest games PlayStation has ever made. Older fans enjoyed once again controlling Kratos, and new fans were introduced to a legendary franchise. While the Norse era should absolutely continue, a remake of the original classic would be a treat for fans. Older fans will get to relive the game in a new way, and new fans can play it for the first time. Video game remakes are becoming more popular, so seeing the beauty of Greece in the style of the newer games is certainly possible.
5. Red Dead Revolver
Red Dead Redemption II is one of the greatest games of the last decade. The gameplay and especially the story see fans return to it again and again. While it is obviously a sequel, many fans may not realize it is actually the third in the series. The first was called Red Dead Revolver and was released in 2004. As one would guess, it is a far cry from the masterpiece of RDR2. A modern update using similar graphics and new missions would not only introduce players to the original game but could also tweak the story to connect it to the newer games.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
As legendary as the Nintendo 64 is, some early games haven’t held up extremely well. Nostalgia aside, Ocarina of Time has some issues that new players could be turned off by. The early days of 3d platformers had some issues, mostly with targeting and camera control. A modern update could fix these issues and create a definitive game version. A full-on remake in the style of Breath of the Wild could be a contender for the best Zelda game of all time. If Resident Evil 4 can do it, why not Zelda?
3. The Simpsons: Hit & Run
Ask those of a certain generation what one of the best cart racers of all time is, and many will answer The Simpsons: Hit & Run. The game mixes the traditional cart racing formula with platforming and even RPG elements. The game serves as a parody of the GTA series and, to many, is the best Simpsons game. As beloved as the game is, the original version does have slight gameplay issues and some bugs that could be tweaked. Video game remakes seem to favor platformers such as Crash, so it is well past time The Simpsons: Hit & Run gets a much-deserved revival.
2. Super Mario 64
Like Ocarina of Time, calling Super Mario 64, an iconic game is an understatement. However, being one of the very first 3d platformers, the N64 version has some issues new gamers may have a hard time ignoring. A remake using graphics and gameplay from Mario Odyessy is a great way to fix them. The Nintendo DS version fixes some issues, but it has become somewhat outdated. A remake combining elements from both versions of the game could make for a legendary Mario experience fans would love.
1. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
One of the greatest games in the Star Wars universe is The Force Unleashed. The legends game following Darth Vader’s apprentice allows players to control now of the most powerful Star Wars characters. After Disney bought Lucasfilm, the game lost its spot in the canon. A remake with updated graphics from the Jedi: Fallen Order series would not only allow the game to be seen in a new light like Resident Evil 4, but the story could also be tweaked to once again allow it to be canon.
