Riot Games, developer of popular MOBA League of Legends, is moving into new territory, developing a new free-to-play card game called Legends of Runeterra.
This new card game will be based on the lore of Runeterra which is where the champions from League of Legends reside. Runeterra has 7 different regions each with different play styles within Legends of Runeterra. These regions are The Shadow Isles, Piltover, Zaun, Ionia, Demacia, Noxus, and the Freljord.
By playing the game, you can unlock more cards for each different region, gaining more cards and building your deck even further. You can also mix cards from different regions.
Champion cards in Legends of Runeterra are more powerful than regular cards. They have special abilities and can also level up making them even stronger.
Legends of Runeterra has its own unique style of play. Players each round can play cards but only one side can attack and one defends. This alternates every round offering something different from the likes of Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone where on each turn players can attack.
Also, the way mana works in Legends of Runeterra works differently. There are two different mana pools. One is for cards and the other is for spells. Unused mana from your turn gets banked into your spell mana pool up for up to three points. Those can then be used to cast spells on your turn or as a reaction.
Riot has also been moving into other genres of games, announcing on their 10th-anniversary stream a new first-person tactical shooter called Project A, a 2D fighting game, a mobile version of League of Legends called Wild Rift and a mysterious new game that not much information was revealed for.
The game currently has no release date but it is available for pre-register on their website.
