Rise of The Pink Ladies is being picked up by Paramount+ for a 10 episode season. According to AVClub, this prequel will take place years before the events of Grease, which is a musical from 1978 where a bunch of adult actors were cast as high schoolers that included John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as the leads. It features two main gangs, The T Birds and The Pink Ladies, who are led by Danny Zucko (John Travolta) and Beth Rizzo (Stockard Channing).
Back to Rydell High, Where The Pink Ladies Rose
This was actually in development for about two years and it was initially planned to be featured on HBO Max when it was still known as Grease: Rydell High. Unfortunately for Grease: Rydell High, HBO decided not to continue the development of this prequel 43 years in the making. Now, if you have been paying attention to all things Grease like I have (love me some Grease), this prequel show is different than the prequel movie by the name of Summer Lovin’, which sounds like a take on one of the better songs in Grease by the name of Summer Nights. Summer Lovin’ is actually the very first line from Summer Nights, here, have a listen:
Tell Me More Tell Me More
There aren’t many details on The Rise of The Pink Ladies or even Summer Lovin’ for that matter, as of yet. All we have for Summer Lovin’ is a logline:
Prequel to Grease focusing on the fling Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson had before reconnecting at high school.”
Which sounds like the reasonable direction to take, but with both actors having aged so much, will they just stick to their guns and cast John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in their current state? I know it sounds absurd, but it would be consistent with Grease, where most of the cast that was supposed to be playing high schoolers, were just actors in their 30s or even older. All I know is that they better keep Rizzo as cold and callous as she was in the movie. Out of all The Pink Ladies, she is definitely my favorite.
