WayForward and Arc System Works have revealed a new trailer for the upcoming beat-em-up River City Girls focusing on one of the two main characters, Misako.
The trailer shows off Misako’s no-nonsense personality as she gets into an argument with her boyfriend Kunio over him eating the last dumpling. She then questions and beats up countless goons in an attempt to find and rescue him. The trailer also shows off some more gameplay, with Misako using various punches, kicks, and slams to deal with enemies, and even buying new combos and special moves from a shop seemingly run by Jimmy from the Double Dragon series.
River City Girls is the latest installment in the long-running River City beat-em-up series. The franchise is probably most famous for the NES game River City Ransom, the classic two-player brawler about knocking pocket change out of people with spinning kicks, trash cans and chain whips, which has inspired many games like it since, including 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. The series has been going on with various installments since the NES days, but River City Girls is the biggest and most unique take on the series in years, putting a twist on the classic formula by having the two female leads rescue their boyfriends, who are also the protagonists of the original River City Ransom.
A blog-post by WayForward describes the full game in more detail:
River City Girls stars Kyoko and Misako, two street-tough high-schoolers who must fight their way through the six regions of River City to rescue their kidnapped boyfriends, series mainstays Kunio and Riki. Along the way, they’ll utilize an arsenal of combos, counters, throws, and special attacks; battle an assortment of enemies; accept numerous side quests; level up with experience points; interact with NPCs (including guest stars from past River City games); and shop for a variety of items, food, and gear to boost stats and unlock new abilities. The girls can even wield weapons and recruit defeated foes to join them in combat!
River City Girls will be available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on September 5th.
