RLJE Films, Shudder, and AMC+ have announced their acquisition of The Apology, an upcoming thriller starring Anna Gunn. Best known for her role in AMC’s Breaking Bad, Gunn will be starring in the lead role in The Apology alongside co-stars Linus Roache and Janeane Garofalo, among others. RLJE will be releasing the film in theaters, with Shudder and AMC+ making it available to stream.
The Apology stars Anna Gunn as Darlene, a recovering alcoholic who, 20 years after the mysterious disappearance of her daughter, is preparing to host a Christmas party with her best friend Gretchen (Janeane Garofalo). The party is underway when, late Christmas Eve, Darlene’s ex-brother-in-law Jack (Linus Roache) turns up on her doorstep, bearing holiday gifts and a dark secret. As a dangerous winter storm traps the party guests together, Darlene finds herself “caught between reason and ruthless instinct…[as] a battle of wits escalates to a violent game of revenge”, per Deadline.
The directorial debut of Alison Star Locke (The Real World), The Apology was reportedly awarded the ReFrame Stamp for a gender-balanced production and was produced by Lisa Whalen, Kim Sherman, and Stacy Jorgensen of Company X Productions, an all-female production company.
RLJE and AMC+ Snag ‘The Apology’
The Apology marks the latest collaboration between RLJE Films and Company X Productions, following the production of No Man of God (2021), starring Elijah Wood, among other films. RLJE, Shudder, and AMC+ have fully financed The Apology and snagged distribution rights for the film.
Regarding the acquisition of the film, RLJE Films executive Mark Ward gave Deadline the following statement:
“The Apology is like nothing else you will see this holiday season — an intense and chilling thriller led by a tour-de-force performance from Anna Gunn. We are ecstatic to once again partner with our friends at Shudder and Company X Productions to bring this captivating original to audiences.”
RLJE Films will be releasing The Apology starring Anna Gunn to theaters on December 16th. The film will be available to stream on AMC+ and Shudder on the same day.
