You may be seeing future Batman Robert Pattinson in a few films in the next few years, but none of them will be the sequel to this year’s The Souvenir.
A recent report from Indiewire has revealed that the 33-year-old actor has left the project due to scheduling conflicts. Robert Pattinson was initially thought to be cast in the first film, but the stars didn’t align and he instead opted to do the sequel. Alas, even that has fallen through due to his numerous upcoming film projects.
A representative for Robert Pattinson told Indiewire, “Despite Rob’s strong desire to do the film, scheduling proved impossible but he very much looks forward to working with [Joanna Hogg, the film’s director] on something down the line”.
Despite this, stars Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton, Ariane Labed and Richard Ayoade are all set to reprise their roles from the first film, which was released January this year at Sundance Film Festival.
Rumour has it that The Souvenir – Part 2 is due to start filming this month in Norfolk. Robert Pattinson was thought to play a new love interest for Swinton Byrne’s character Julie. And, if the star’s track record is anything to go by (Twilight, Remember Me, Love and Distrust), he’s no stranger to playing the romantic type.
Regardless, despite the film’s Part 2 moniker, in an interview with Indiewire, director Joanna Hogg said that “[i]t’s another film. It’s another film and it should stand on its own, not just as a two-part thing”. She added that the film has its own unique feel and that it picks up directly where the first left off. No word on a release date yet.
In the meantime, Robert Pattinson has some big projects on the horizon. In 2020, he will star in Christopher Nolan’s action-thriller film Tenet alongside John David Washington, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branaugh – just to name a few.
Then, in 2021, we will see him portray a young Batman/Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeve’s The Batman.
