It can take a lot for an actor to get in shape for blockbuster movies, particularly if you are playing Batman. In an interview with ES, Robert Pattinson talked about the “insidious” male body standards leading to unhealthy diets and lifestyles. The actor also talked about the various diets he has tried in the past and how his goal this year is to have “consistency.”
Robert Pattinson confirmed he had tried “every fad you can think of,” from eating nothing but boiled potatoes to lose weight to keto. When it came to watching calories, he called it “addictive.” When prepping for a film that requires getting in shape and watching what you eat can lead to unhealthy habits, physical issues, and a distorted view of one’s own body. For the last one, the actor does not have an issue with that.
“Even if you’re just watching your calorie intake, it’s extraordinarily addictive — and you don’t quite realize how insidious it is until it’s too late.”
Robert Pattinson on male body standards and diet fads
Issues with male body standards are consistent inside and outside of Hollywood; even Robert Pattinson can’t avoid it. The Batman required heavy-duty training as he teamed up with Rigan Machado, who worked with Chadwick Boseman and Keanu Reeves. He showed what progress he managed by the shape he got in for The Batman, which showcased his body with plenty of shirtless scenes. He was not as dehydrated as many actors get to make the muscles and veins pop, but he still looked at what would be needed to fight baddies to protect Gotham.
The Batman 2 is currently in the works. Matt Reeves is also trying to flesh out his Bat-verse with spinoff series and more. What those plans include is not entirely known due to James Gunn taking over the creative side of DC. He is supposedly going to let Reeves work on his universe outside of the DCU. As Gunn prepares to show us what he has in store, we could have an answer to this sometime in the year.
