In July, Psyonix announced that Rocket League is going free-to-play on all available platforms. And nearing the free-to-play launch this month, they announced via a blog update that both PS4 and Switch players won’t be needing PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions to play online anymore. Unfortunately for Xbox players though, you will still need to be subscribed to Xbox LIVE.
Moreover, the blog post also highlighted huge changes to Rocket League‘s seasons, competitive ranks, and some user experience updates, including:
- Streamlining the seasonal schedule. Competitive Seasons, Competitive Tournaments, and Rocket Pass will follow the same schedule when Season 1 begins.
- Grand Champion will be split into three ranks: Grand Champion 1, Grand Champion 2, and Grand Champion 3.
- A new competitive rank will be added, named Supersonic Legend.
- Both Grand Champion and Supersonic Legend will have their own Season Rewards.
- Solo Standard Playlist will be removed after Competitive Season 14.
- New bot difficulty under Rookie.
- New quick chat options.
- Rocket ID will be integrated into Epic Games Accounts.
Console players can download the game from each respective digital storefronts when it finally goes free-to-play later this month. But for PC players, the free-to-play version will be an Epic Games Store exclusive. On Steam the price will be discontinued instead. Still, if you already own Rocket League on Steam, you’ll be able to cross-play along with PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Epic players like usual.
Previous buyers will get a special loot for buying the game before it went free. You will be awarded the Legacy Status as a form of thanks for supporting the game, which includes all DLC before it went free-to-play, a title, two boosts, a set of wheels, and a banner. Of course, all these bling and bragging rights will let you stand out from the free-to-play crowd. Ready to take on the inevitable wave of newcomers?
