What do you get when you mix RC cars with the classic game of soccer? Well, a whole lot of mayhem, that’s for sure. That and everything Rocket League has had on offer thus far. The title has taken the multiplayer world by storm, offering some fast-paced gameplay and hours of laughs for you and your friends. Up until now, the game has been available on multiple platforms for $19.99, but that’s all about to change. As previously announced, Rocket League is going free to play! You’ll be able to play for free on PC (Epic Games Store), PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch starting September 23. Psyonix showcased a CGI trailer this morning to announce the news, which you can find below.
To prep for the update, a small patch will be released for Rocket League tomorrow at 9 AM PDT. The update will include cross-platform progression linking, allowing players to keep their progress on whatever platform they choose. This means you could be out and about, scoring goals on the Nintendo Switch while keeping your progress elsewhere. All you have to do is link your platform accounts to your Epic Games Store account, and you’re set. Players who purchased the game will also get Legacy Status items. This includes all Rocket League DLC before the free to play launch, a title, two boosts, some new wheels, and a banner. To join these are quality of life improvements and bug fixes, details of which you can find here.
When free to play launches, Rocket League moves over to the Epic Games Store on PC. This means Steam purchases will no longer be available, but Steam players can still play the game freely. There’ll also be revamped tournaments and challenges, a new Rocket Pass (Battle Pass), and two new item packs. You can expect a new event later down the line named Llama-Rama. You’ll get more on that as it gets closer to launching.
This is huge news for the Rocket League community, with many new players joining the ranks. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the new free to play model. Do you think it was the right move to go to a free to play launch? Will this be your first time trying the game?
