Ever since Epic’s purchase of Psyonix on May 1 of 2019, fans have been wary about the direction of Rocket League and the community response. Lots of change has come to the service since then including the title playable for free, the removal of crates and keys for a credit system, and even a redesign of the interface. Generally, the main game stays the same while what changes is how players unlock items and cosmetics. Facing some criticism over the inclusion of the new currency, the game has still been moving along with their subscription model for players to unlock items. With the free-to-play model now applied, Psyonix has revamped its Rocket Pass model with an entirely new season system attached. With Season 2 nearly upon us, Psyonix prepared a video showcasing and teasing the upcoming cosmetics being added to the title later this month.
With a heavy emphasis on the musical theme that Rocket League has always been so in tune with, the new Rocket Pass seems to celebrate that fact much more. In a game with high tempo decision making and razor-thin margins, the electronic techno mix befits one of Rocket League’s oldest motifs. Animated decals and car toppers of equalizers and pad controllers make the new flair of the season particularly eye-catching. Not to mention the light show goal explosion and even the teaser of a mic drop goal explosion is perfectly fit amongst the rest of the thematic choices. Coupled with the addition of player themes for goals, a new EDM type map, and even the return of Rocket Lab maps in a limited gamemode. The new Rocket Pass will more than likely have 70 tiers of new exclusive items to the season both new and premium with the latter costing around 1000 credits or $10 to obtain access.
