According to a recent tweet by Rotten Tomatoes, Oscar-nominated actress Rooney Mara has officially been cast to portray Audrey Hepburn in an upcoming Apple Studios biopic. Rooney will not only be cast as the global cultural icon, but she’ll also be a producer for the film, making this her third producer role to date. Although the film’s synopsis is not yet public knowledge, we know the Apple Studios film will be directed by fellow Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino’s body of work includes a series of shorts, feature films, and documentaries, including the 2017 critically acclaimed romance Call Me By Your Name.

More Work Inspired By The Life Of Audrey Hepburn
This is not the first time Audrey Hepburn’s life has been translated to a screen. The first adaptation was ABC’s 2000 TV movie The Audrey Hepburn Story, which also saw its starring actress donning a producer role. The Audrey Hepburn Story stars Jennifer Love Hewitt as the Breakfast At Tiffany’s actress and depicts the life of Hepburn between the years of 1935 – 1960.
In 2020, Netflix released Audrey, a documentary-style film featuring never-before-seen footage of Audrey Hepburn throughout her iconic life and career. A year later, Variety confirmed that a TV show about Audrey Hepburn’s life was being developed by writer and producer Jacquline Hoyt. Audrey will be inspired by a treatment penned by Hepburn’s son Luca Dotti and Italian journalist Luigi Spinola. Aubrey is rumored to take us on a journey from Hepburn’s developmental years in Europe up until her trailblazing career during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
The announcement of Rooney Mara’s casting as Audrey Hepburn biopic was received with some backlash. According to the New York Post, fans of Lily Collins were particularly stewing, advocating that she would’ve been a better fit for the role. However, one could argue that Mara and Hepburn have a lot in common, including their petite frames and signature looks of dark hair, porcelain skin, and striking brows.
