As of today, Rooster Teeth has officially raised over $1 million for charity via their 24 hours for Extra Life live stream. Between the main stream and the company’s community, $1,209,970.73 in total will be donated to the Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas.
Hosted by Jack (Achievement Hunter Co-Founder) and Cati Patillo, this was the fifth year in the row Rooster Teeth has run the event, managing to increase the money earned each year. While charity itself is enough of a reason to donate, the company has managed to find success raising money in the form ridiculous skits to fill the 24 hrs and outrageous stretch goals to be fulfilled at a later date if the specific money amount was reached.
Skits on the stream varied from masochistic challenges – which were decided upon by the spin of a wheel – like Chris Demarais getting hit with paintball eggs, to heartwarming moments like Achievement Hunter’s Michael Jones’ first dance with his baby daughter Iris. Plenty of games were played as well, with the top right corner being devoted to a specific game that was being streamed.
The most notable stretch goal that was met was at the $1 million mark, which will see the Achievement Hunter crew perform a live musical titled, Achievement Hunter: The Musical. The one right about it at $1.5 million, saw Achievement Hunter breaking the high top table from the Off Topic set, but thankfully for those who love the badly branded table, it was just short.
Other members of the Rooster Teeth family joined the stream as well, as Funhaus and ScrewAttack stole the show with bits like Funhaus Shopping Network and ScrewAttack’s game show.
While Rooster Teeth’s official numbers on the Extra Life website come out to around $650k and $742k for each category, it doesn’t account for the $400k worth of merchandise that was sold during the event as well. Even without the merch added in, RT managed to almost triple the amount made by the second closest group, which was Mindcrack with $255k and $261k.
Plenty of those donations came from familiar faces as well and in big amounts. Alongside Rooster Teeth Co-founder Burnier Burns’ donation of $20k, former Achievement Hunter turned professional Twitch streamer Ray Narvez Jr. also donated $20k, putting the total over $500k at the time of his donation.
While the steam is over, donations are still being accepted at this Link. And speaking of Extra Life, be sure to check out The Nerd Stash’s Twitch stream as well, as each dollar earned is donated to the Kentucky Hospital’s pediatric center
