The Marvel Universe has a multitude of iconic locations. While not spoken of often, Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane houses many unhinged criminals in an effort to rehabilitate them. During the Absolute Carnage event, the facility caught fire and fell to the ground during an attack. Now, Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage #1 explores the site’s origins.
Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage #1 Spoilers Ahead
Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage #1 aims to reveal the untold story behind the facility. Written by Frank Tieri and drawn by both Angel Unzueta and Guiu Vilanova, the issue switches between past and present day. Unzueta illustrates the present day, which shows Reed Richards, John Jameson, Misty Knight, and Mayor Wilson Fisk exploring the remains of the institute. Looking to rebuild the facility so it can house patients again, the group finds a journal written by founder Jonas Ravencroft.
Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage #1 continues in the colonial past where cannibals inhabit the land, preying on those who wander too close. Drawn by Vilanova, a couple named Cortland and Mary eventually settle on the property. However, the cannibals soon kidnap Mary, prompting Cortland to pursue them to their cave. Though he saves Mary, Cortland sees that the cannibals are a cult worshipping an entity by the name of Knull. Knull is the God of Symbiotes that Carnage was trying to make contact with during Absolute Carnage.
Driven insane by his experience, Cortland slaughters various colonists before others finally subdue him. He becomes the country’s first mass murderer and is imprisoned in a cage. The cursed land which he now inhabits becomes the site for the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane. Furthermore, Cortland’s last name is revealed to be Kasady, linking Carnage to the site through his bloodline.
Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage #1 is available in stores now. Do you feel that this adds to Carnage’s story? Why do you think Fisk is there? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
