God of War was reborn in 2018 with its soft reboot. After years of crushing skulls and tearing limbs across ancient Greece, players were tired. Not tired of the thrill, but tired of the repetitiveness. A story of revenge and conquest fell flat.
Cory Barlog and his team at Santa Monica Studio rewrote history in 2018’s God of War. Players saw a new side of Kratos. He was unquestionably still a badass, but he was also a damn good father. Combat was no longer a sport, but rather a means to survive and protect. The fascination with Kratos has sparked many conversations about a potential God of War feature film, and there’s a new casting rumor!
The Animal: Bautista
According to We Got This Covered, Dave Bautista is the rumored favorite to fill the shoes of Ares. Ares, the main antagonist of the acclaimed 2005 game, is the Greek god of war. Ares assumes most of the blame for the treacherous life Kratos has lived because he tricked the spartan into killing his wife and daughter.
The 2005 installment focuses on Kratos’ journey to defeat Ares on behalf of Athena, goddess of wisdom. She sends Kratos to Athens to confront Ares and the story officially begins.
Considering Dave Bautista is rumored to portray Ares, the potential God of War movie will likely cover the period of the first game. Although, the plot could be God of War:Â Ascension’s. This plotline takes place mere months after the deaths of Kratos’ wife and daughter and follows his subsequent imprisonment.
A God of War film is simply speculation…for now
Of course, this is all speculation and hearsay. There hasn’t been an official announcement for a God of War movie or television series. Earlier this year, speculation reached its height after God of War director Cory Barlog responded to a GamesIndustry.biz tweet. The initial tweet asked readers which games would translate well to a Netflix-style series. Following the massive success of The Witcher Netflix series, many were eager to comment. But, the biggest voice was Cory Barlog’s: “God. Of. War.”.
Barlog later revealed that he was not hinting towards any TV or movie project. Simply, he genuinely thinks the franchise’s story would translate well.
Again, everything I’ve said is just rumored. If I had Dave’s number I would call him and ask him personally. I don’t, and I doubt he’d answer if I did. So for now, let’s all just imagine a world where a giant Dave Bautista stands face-to-face to a giant Kratos (maybe Jason Momoa?).
