rumor is circulating that Hugh Grant is in talks to take over the role of the Doctor in season 14 of the BBC science-fiction series Doctor Who. Russell T. Davies is returning as the series showrunner, and insiders say he is planning a Marvel-style makeover of the long-running show. An insider for The Mirror claims that Davis is eager to bring on Grant for the sake of giving the show a “fresh feel.” Grant, who has made a name for himself in romantic comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones’ Diary, would be one of the most high-profile actors to take on the role of the iconic Time Lord.
Hugh Grant’s Second ‘Doctor Who’ Offer
According to ABC News in Australia, Davies offered Grant the role of the Doctor back in 2004. Grant turned down the role, and in 2007 said, “It’s only when you see it on screen that you think, ‘Damn, that was good. Why did I say no?'” There’s some regret seemingly expressed in that statement, so perhaps Grant would view this as a second chance.
When Grant rejected the role, the Doctor went on to be played by Christopher Eccleston. The character, who regenerates in a different body when mortally wounded, went on to be played by David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and most recently, Jodie Whittaker. She was the first woman to take the role. Whittaker recently finished her final full season in the role and has filmed her regeneration scene. She will appear in two specials this year, marking the end of her time portraying the Doctor.
‘Doctor Who’ Marvel-Style Makeover
According to The Mirror’s insider, Davies wants to make a Marvel-style Doctor Who that creates franchises around the Doctor and surrounding characters. Under Davies’ reign, the show had two spin-offs, namely The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. So this would not be the first time he’s taken the show in that route.
