It’s been over 10 years since the last console Metroid game. Metroid Prime 4 might be a hot mess of development these days. There’s been little update on the project and looking from the outside in, fans wonder if and when it will ever happen. Meanwhile, in the Mario realm, all is well and consistent in releases. Despite the large differences in the Nintendo franchises, they are inevitably linked to this rumor from a regular and often reliable video game news leak source “Sabi.”
Nintendo Giving us a Sequel to Metroid Fusion on Switch?
Stated in tweets that after looking into the rumors, Sabi claims both games will be slated for 2020 release on Switch. A 2D Metroid game (not Metroid Prime 4), is “linked to Fusion.” This is in reference to the Metroid Fusion game released on Gameboy Advance in 2002. If the rumors are true it sounds like it might just pick up where that game left off. This wouldn’t fulfill Metroid Prime 4 fans. However, a 2D Metroid game wouldn’t hurt and would likely be welcomed by all Metroid fans.
Paper Mario Returning to Form?
Sabi also spoke about a Paper Mario game as simply “going back to how it was.” This is likely in reference to the last few installments of Paper Mario. The more recent titles did not receive anywhere near the reception of the original Paper Mario games. They’re likely to return to what worked in the first place. They’ll likely combine original elements with new features that stay within that theme, though this is all speculation folks.

However you spin it if the rumors are true, surely Nintendo will be releasing a direct or some type of news to build up the hype and marketing for these titles. Although at first glance they don’t seem like huge games, they’re both beloved franchises. Metroid is one that has been long devoid of titles, with fans begging for more. The move would make sense as it would give something to chew on until there is more development for Metroid Prime 4. In addition, the Switch would accommodate both the mechanics and style of these 2D games perfectly (as it often does). For now, all we can do is wait and see if Sabi is right again. Until then hang in there Metroid and Paper Mario fans, there is hope.
