A Target ad for one of their locations in Australia showed off some interesting news on a Red Dead Redemption 2 port for the Nintendo Switch earlier this week (via RDR2.org). Some say this news comes as a possible April’s Fools Day prank, but some say this is actually true.
The game, when announced, was hoped by the community to be on the Switch. RDR2 is technologically very intense due to the graphics and the gameplay themselves. But, it appears that this excuse can’t be said anymore. This is due to the fact that other games such as Doom, Skyrim, and even Wolfenstein II being all ported over to the console. Saying the console can’t handle the game is just not correct. Another reason behind many saying the game would not come to the Switch is due to its intense mature content. The game, being set in the American Wild West, was said by the President of Nintendo Reggie Fils-Aime to be not family friendly enough for the system (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter):
“We’d love for it to be [on Nintendo Switch]. But again – and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process – Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities.”
Back to the rumor at hand. The Target ad shows Red Dead Redemption 2 as a multiple platform game with the red Nintendo Switch logo on top alongside the PS4 and Xbox One logos. The ad itself was then modified to now showing the game only for PS4 and Xbox One. The Switch logo is now gone, but not before some serious fans of the game took screenshots. This would prove to people wondering if it really was a prank for April’s Fools that the game is being worked for the console.
For now, we will just have to wait and see what happens in the future regarding a possible RDR2 port to the Switch.
