Sony just announced Russell Crowe is joining the new Marvel movie, Kraven the Hunter.
The Spider-Verse is expanding as Sony is bringing Kraven to live-action. It was announced last year that actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson would be playing the title role of Kraven. Kraven is known as a Russian hunter that quickly becomes one of Spiderman’s iconic foes in future comics. Kraven first appeared in the Amazing Spider-man #15 comic in 1964. He would later be featured in Spider-Man issues, one of the best comic series of all time, Kraven’s Last Hunt (Amazing Spider-Man Issues #634, 635, 636, 637). Kraven sets out on one final hunt in the series where he kills and buries Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, and then takes the hero role himself.
There are no details on what Sony’s Kraven the Hunter movie will be about. The film is in pre-production. Russell Crowe is the second cast member to join the Kraven movie alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is known for his roles in Kick-Ass, Godzilla, Tenet, and Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Russell Crowe is no stranger to the silver screen as he has starred in Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, 3:10 to Yuma, American Gangster, and Les Misérables.
Sony has been on a roll to bring the Spider-Verse to life. They won the Oscar for Best Animated Picture for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, with the sequel to be released in October 2022. Sony also released the highly acclaimed film Spider-Man: No Way Home, making over $1 Billion at the box office. The studio is set to release Morbius in May 2022, starring Jared Leto as the title role. Kraven the Hunter is set for January 13, 2023, but with all the pushbacks from the pandemic and being in the early stages of production, it is hard to say if Sony will keep that release date at this time.
Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is still in theaters today. You can watch Spider-Man the Original Series on Disney+ now!
