As survivalist games continue to change and evolve with new iterations, so do older titles. Developed by Facepunch, Rust has gone through so many different iterations of its gameplay. With a recent spike in player activity thanks to online Twitch streams giving the title more notoriety, it has received praise worldwide. Recognizably, the European community consistently has some of the most played servers and the most popular player base. Players do often play on FacePunch servers which can have some benefits such as a softcore mode that is more forgiving. Unfortunately, player progression for users has been lost. Facepunch servers lost a total of 25 servers full of player progression due to a data center fire in Strasbourg, France.
Update:
We've confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers during the OVH data centre fire. We're now exploring replacing the affected servers.Data will be unable to be restored.

While the cause of the fire is still unknown, the flare-up is thought to have originated early Wednesday morning in France. While the fire did destroy a significant amount of data in the 2nd center, the other 3 were unaffected as the situation was contained by local firefighters. This type of data loss is unprecedented for an online service game’s servers. While naturally, Rust servers have multiple resets throughout their lifetime so an eventual loss was coming. Yet it cannot be understated that the massive fire affected many other cloud services than OVH services. Many in the area were able to see the flames and the engulfing smoke that drowned out the color of the fire.

As shown above is Kotaku Australia editor, Alex Walker, picturing the inferno at its somewhat height. Thankfully damages were kept to a minimum and no persons were harmed in the accident. Facepunch has confirmed that they are looking into bringing these servers back as soon as possible. At the time of writing, they have managed to bring online 21 of the Rust servers with more expected to be online within the week.
