Raunch comedy Sausage Party hit theaters in 2016 and is now coming to TV as Amazon ordered a series, Variety confirmed. Subtitled Foodtopia, not much is known about what to expect. It is confirmed stars from the film will reprise their roles with Seth Rogan, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton. New additions will include Will Forte (MacGruber), Sam Richardson (The Afterparty), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), and Yassir Lester (Duncanville).
Rogan and long-time collaborator Evan Goldberg cited the rise of TV for the series, saying that “film is completely dead.” They teased that fans of the 2016 animated movie should expect “heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food sex.” Essentially to them, “it’s exactly what the world needs right now.”
Amazon cooks up Sausage Party series with original cast members returning
The original film was co-directed by Greg Tierman and Conrad Vernon, who did the animated Addams Family films. Rogan, Goldberg, Ariel Shaffir (Future Man), and Kyle Hunter (Future Man). It also starred Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, James Franco, Nick Kroll, Paul Rudd, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson.
For an R-rated animated comedy, the film was a huge hit. After its premiere at SXSW, when its theatrical run came and went, it grossed $140 million from an approximate $19 million budget. It may have been six years now, but a win like that would lead to a door being opened for as long as it took for another installment, whether it would have been a sequel or the now-announced Amazon Sausage Party series.
The returning cast were already been on top of their careers in 2016 and continued that success. Rogan will star in the Super Mario Bros. movie, Cera will star in the Barbie movie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Norton will be in the Knives Out sequel Glass Onion later this year, Krumholtz will be in the stacked cast of Christopher Nolan’s next movie Oppenheimer, and Wiig will reprise her Despicable Me role for the fourth film.
