While Scream VI marks another chapter in the long-running meta-slasher franchise created by Kevin Williamson, it’s the first sequel not to feature two of the film’s original stars, Neve Campbell and David Arquette.
Neve Campbell and David Arquette Are Absent From Scream VI
Neve Campbell and David Arquette played Sidney Prescott and Dewey Riley in the previous installments of Scream. The two also faced off in several versions of Ghostface in the first five installments.
However, David’s appearance in the franchise ended with Scream 5 when his character finally fell victim to the masked killer.
Neve, on the other hand, opted not to return after a contract dispute. However, she told ET the door was open for her return in the future.
“I care about these movies. If they were to come to me with an amount that felt in keeping with… the value that I bring them, I would certainly consider it,” she said at the time.
See Scream VI Cast’s Reaction To Neve Campbell And David Arquette’s Absence
Ahead of the new film’s debut in theaters on March 10, ET spoke with the cast and crew. The outlet garnered that the upcoming film honors the duo from the Scream VI cast’s reaction to Neve and David’s absence.
Speaking about David, Dermot Mulroney told ET that “[he’s] obviously one of the most favorite characters in the whole franchise.” Joining the franchise as Dewey Bailey, David knew he had “a big badge to fill.”
Courteney Cox also reacted to the question by saying, “Of course, other characters are missed.” Courteney is the only remaining original franchise star, reprising her role as Gale Weathers. However, she is not the only veteran to return for Scream VI, as Hayden Panettiere is also back.
According to Jasmin Savoy Brown, the new film is “absolutely always paying homage, honoring everyone who came before while giving Courteney a new moment to shine.” Jasmin is among the new group of survivors first introduced in Scream 5.
Neve Campbell and David Arquette’s absences will surely be felt. It is good that the film’s creators have decided to honor the duo in upcoming productions.
