Actress Selena Gomez could make history at the 2022 Emmy awards for her performance in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. The 29-year-old actress could receive a historic nomination for the Hulu mystery comedy where she stars as Mabel Mora.
Only Murders in the Building stars Selena Gomez alongside costars and famous comedians Martin Short and Steve Martin. According to the show’s IMDB description, Only Murders in the Building is about “Three strangers who share an obsession with true crime suddenly find themselves caught up in one.” The new comedy-drama already has 28 nominations and six wins from this awards season. Who knows what more awards could add up for the show with the 2022 Emmys on its way.
How Selena Gomez Could Make History At The 2022 Emmys
In 73 years of the Emmys, only two Latinas have been nominated in the lead actress comedy category. West Side Story’s iconic Rita Moreno was nominated in 1983 for 9 to 5 and won an Emmy that claimed her to the EGOT title in 1977 for her performance in The Muppet Show. The last Latina to be nominated for this Emmy category was America Ferrera, who was nominated in 2008 and won in 2007 for Ugly Betty. If Selena Gomez follows suit and gets nominated for her performance from Hulu, she will make history as the third Latina to be nominated for the lead actress comedy category.
The comedy categories for the 2022 Emmys seem to be the most competitive this season. This includes the lead actress category Gomez is in talks for. Hopefully, Selena Gomez Hulu’s performance in Only Murders in the Building will be nominated as she stays in conversation with Rachel Brosnahan from Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jean Smart for HBO Max Original Hacks, and Issa Rae for her final season of HBO’s Insecure.
The nominations ceremony for the 2022 Emmys will take place a few months from now, on July 12th.
The 74th Emmys ceremony will air on NBC on Monday, September 12th, 2022, at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.
