It’s true. The superhero duo known as Sharkboy and Lavagirl from Robert Rodriguez’s 2005 family-friendly film will be returning to our screens.
The director of such classics like Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, and the Spy Kids trilogy talked about the upcoming film in a recent [email protected] discussion hosted by Collider. He commented on how Netflix approached him to make another project like the Spy Kids installments, saying that the movies “had done just so well on their service.” Younger audiences can simply rewind and replay the movies in lieu of going through the trouble of making it the movie theater for multiple screenings.
We Can Be Heroes the new movie will be called, and it will feature the heroic pair as adults raising a daughter who has been equipped with both of her parents’ abilities. It follows a team of superheroes much like the Avengers, but the group all have children with powers who don’t necessarily know how to use them. Trouble is on the horizon, and it’s up to the kids to understand their true potential to face against the opposing evil forces.
The film is in its final stages of post-production. Rodriguez had already shot scenes and was in the middle of editing We Can Be Heroes when the Coronavirus pandemic struck the world. As of now, he’s scoring the music remotely, with the musicians in another room. “I can’t be in the orchestra room as usual. They’re all sitting six feet apart in Vienna, it’s a wild time,” said Rodriguez. He shared the [email protected] discussion with fellow directors Colin Trevorrow and Joseph Kosinski.
We Can Be Heroes does not have a release date just yet, but the casting has been announced to star Priyanka Chopra, Christian Slater, and Pedro Pascal. Taylor Dooley – the original Lavagirl – is set to make her appearance, while news of Sharkboy Taylor Lautner coming back has yet to be revealed. YaYa Gosselin, Akira Akbar, Andrew Diaz, Andy Walken, Hala Finley, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Lotus Blossom, Lyon Daniels, Nathan Blair, Vivien Lyra Blair, Adriana Barraza, and Christopher McDonald will also star alongside the main characters.
