Former Saturday Night Live player Kyle Mooney will be directing Y2k, a disaster comedy for A24. Mooney was among the many featured players who exited SNL in 2022. He’s now making his directorial debut with A24, which is a big deal when the studio just swept up the award season with The Whale and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Deadline reports that along with setting Mooney as director, A24 has also set the cast for Y2K. The all-star cast includes Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Mason Gooding (Scream VI), singer and rapper The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker (Us), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Miles Robbins (Blockers), Alicia Silverstone (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Fred Hechinger (Fear Street Trilogy) and Daniel Zolghadri (Funny Pages).
Underrated SNL Alum Kyle Mooney Making Directorial Debut With ‘Y2k’ for A24
Kyle Mooney started out his career in comedy with the comedy group Good Neighbor with his friends Nick Rutherford and Dave McCary, and fellow former SNL cast member Beck Bennett. He joined SNL in 2013. It was frequently joked about on the show how often Mooney was not featured in sketches. He was also frequently featured in sketches that were cut for time. Regardless, he is considered a severely underrated SNL alum who starred in several sketches that were memorable and hilarious. Now, with the disaster movie Y2K, A24 is giving Mooney a chance to show what he can do behind the camera with his directorial debut.
Along with his work on SNL, Mooney co-wrote and starred in Brigsby Bear. He also wrote for the Comedy Central series Nathan for You. Mooney also appeared in A24’s Never Goin’ Back. Mooney will soon appear in the Jennifer Lawrence-led raunchy comedy No Hard Feelings.
Y2K will be set in 1999, and it will center on two teenage nobodies who crash a New Year’s Eve party to end the millennium, only for things to go crazy when the clock strikes midnight. While director Kyle Mooney and the cast have been announced, details of when production will start, as well as the film’s release, are unknown at the time.
