A biopic about legendary rapper Snoop Dogg is in the works from Universal Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will be the first film from Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Pictures, which he runs with Sara Ramaker. The film will be directed by Allen Hughes (Menace II Society and Dead Presidents), and it will be written by Joe Robert Cole (co-writer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever). Snoop Dogg is producing the film with Ramaker, and much of the music from his past catalog will be featured in the film. Snoop Dogg said in a statement, “I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind. It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
Snoop Dogg Biopic From Universal Chronicles Iconic Rap Career
Universal is covering quite an iconic career with this Snoop Dogg biopic. Snoop Dogg, who was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., rose to fame in the early 1990s thanks to his work with Dr. Dre and his albums Doggystyle and The Doggfather. He’s gone on to become a jack of many trades, having success as an actor (including voice work), a DJ, and an entrepreneur. Snoop Dogg’s business ventures include technology, food, fashion, and cannabis. He’s also at work on the comedy film The Underdogs with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris.
The Snoop Dogg biopic will not be Universal’s first dive into the rap culture. The studio had great success with 2002’s 8 Mile, which won the best original song Oscar for “Lose Yourself.” Universal also had great success in 2015 for Straight Outta Compton.
