One of the bigger announcements of E3 2018 came alongside the port of Fortnite to the Nintendo switch: Cross-platform play. Regardless of whether players are on Xbox One, PC, or Mobile, they will now be able to play the most popular Battle Royale game in the world with each other. Sony and the PS4 are the only ones noticeably absent.
This is the second time that Sony has not allowed cross-play for Fortnite, as they nixed the feature a while back after Epic allowed PS4 and Xbox One cross-play. Now it seems they don’t want to play nice with Nintendo either.
Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aimé had the following to say regarding the situation.
“We embrace working with a developer and enabling them to bring their vision to life, and whether that’s Fortnite, whether that’s a number of the other games that have cross-platform play on our console, from a developer standpoint that’s what we want. And we work hard with them to bring that to life.
What competitors do is their decision to make. We believe being both developer-forward and fan-forward is in the best interest of the game.”
In a statement regarding the lack of Fortnite crossplay, Sony had the following to say:
“We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience.
With… more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles.
We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms.
“We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point.”
Despite “always being open to hearing the PlayStation community” the statement fails to even give a proper reason as to why the company won’t allow cross compatibility with other systems, let alone the Switch.
