Sony is set to open a new office, a huge 65,000 square foot one in Liverpool City Centre, with this new Liverpool headquarters being the central hub of Sony Europe. It means that the PlayStation firm will relocate from its old home in the Wavertree suburb of Liverpool after 27 long years – but it’s probably about time.
Sony interactive Europe had been based at Wavertree Technology Park. It was a massive part of the city since the initial debut of the original PlayStation in Europe – has it been that long already? This brand-new campus will be a top-of-the-range facility, boasting new collaboration and entertainment spaces, a cafe, a staff gym, and a rooftop terrace, which really will dwarf the old setup quite significantly. Take a look at a planned look below.
What does Sony’s new Liverpool office mean for the future?
If you are not aware, PlayStation has been a massive business in Liverpool over the years, and at its peak, was able to employ over 500 staff members. This is good news again for the local economy because this new campus will bring more jobs, more revenue, and another essential hub for the ever-growing city. It has also operated numerous developers in the area, with the news that only last year it had acquired Firesprite Studio, a Liverpool-based game developer. And if you remember, the Psygnosis trademark was renewed by Sony at the end of last year, which was another locally-based game dev.
Sony has assured everyone that this new location is designed to attract and retain talent and hopes for better connections with tech companies, all their business partners, and all the academic communities in the area. The news that Sony is set to open a new office can only be a good thing. Sony’s new Liverpool headquarters will hopefully be open in the Spring of 2022.
