In a recent merchandise upload on Amazon, it is revealed that Wong (Benedict Wong) still holds the title of “Sorcerer Supreme” in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. Spider-Man: No Way Home first clarified Wong’s role as the current “Sorcerer Supreme” in the MCU. Wong gained the title in a “technicality.” According to Strange, Wong got the title by default after he himself blipped out of existence for five years thanks to the Thanos snap in Avengers: Infinity War. We can visibly see he’s annoyed about the decision in No Way Home. This may even be why he purposely went against Wong’s wishes when taking on the spell for Peter.
Even though the job is not “meant” for him, Wong is much more experienced and ready for it than Strange as of now. The role (as fans thought) was originally always meant for Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), but after the events in No Way Home, it has only proved Strange still needs more experience before taking on the title. This may actually be a great chance to see Strange grow even more as a character in upcoming films.
After being introduced in Doctor Strange in 2016, Wong has appeared in quite a few MCU films, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as No Way Home wherein he specifically warned Strange not to do the spell that (SPOILER) ended up breaking open the multiverse. Dr. Stephen Strange will be joined in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness by Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams), Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a new addition to the cast, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), and of course Wong as current Sorcerer Supreme.
The Amazon upload product information reveals the merchandise is ‘Officially Licensed Marvel Apparel’. The t-shirt features images and titles of Wong (as the Sorcerer Supreme) and Doctor Strange. The shirt also has the title of the upcoming sequel, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ in the corner of the graphic.
The fact that Wong still holds the title of “Sorcerer Supreme” may set up some interesting storylines between Strange and himself. After seeing the trailer for DSitMoM, it’s especially fair to say that after the events in No Way Home, Strange is going to be under a lot of heat. Will Wong and Strange’s differences create a clash in their relationship? The first words in the official trailer for the sequel is the voice of Wong from NWH saying “Don’t cast that spell. It’s too dangerous.” Strange will definitely receive backlash as we hear Mordo say, “Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished.”
Proceeding after Doctor Strange’s No Way Home appearance last month, it won’t be long until we see Stephen Strange on the screen again. The Sam Raimi directed sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is set to hit theaters in May 2022. Are you excited for the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel?
