Welcome to Speedrun Fast, dedicated to covering your favorite games from start to finish as quickly as humanly possible. And occasionally, as quick as superhumanly possible. This time we’re doing Red Dead Redemption, which released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. Joshimuz holds the world record run for Any% completion, which just happens to be the only recorded category anyone has bothered to submit to the boards. Joshi himself talks about the lack of categories, and Red Dead Redemption runners in general, in the speedrunning forums. But hey, Any is fine by us. Strap yourselves in for this one, we’re in for the long haul.

You saw that right – Red Dead Redemption is a five hour game at its absolute fastest. There’s a lot of escort missions and mandatory horseback dialogue that keeps the game moving at its own pace, with few opportunities for the runner to break ahead. The result is a speedrun that feels more like a casual play, probably one of the reasons there are so few runners. Despite this, Red Dead Redemption manages to remain an interesting watch, and we have the benefit of being able to take it in doses rather than all at once.
There’s a bit more going on in the game than first appears. For the purposes of playing for 100% completion or doing the survivalist challenge, the day and night cycle makes a difference for the things players can do at any one time. Wildlife spawn timers also change depending on this cycle, and some achievements are better collected during certain missions due to these mechanics and scripted events. This makes pre-routing an important part of running, even for a normally straightforward game like Red Dead Redemption.
