“Snake, can you hear me? There’s an update on the mission objective. You’re going to need to complete Snake Eater in an hour and a half, on European Extreme difficulty, with the Foxhound rank. Think you can do it? What? Well, you don’t HAVE to use that difficulty and rank, but where’s the fun in that? Now get out there and make me proud, soldier!”
Yup, that’s right. This isn’t just a normal old speedrun of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, it’s the ultimate challenge the game has to offer. The rules don’t require a difficulty setting or a certain rank, but most of the runners choose the highest one. The world record is held by Mr. Snawk, only six seconds ahead of second place Hikari on the same difficulty, same rank. Let’s see how he does it.
European Extreme is regular Extreme, but it’s game over if you even get spotted. Foxhound is achieved in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater by getting no kills, less than ten life bar damage, no continues, no life medicine, less than 25 saves and 20 meals, less than five hours play time, and using no special items. Crazy as that is, Mr. Snawk still managed the feat in 1:19:25. As demonstrated, you can still run up behind enemies and knock them out if you time it well enough. It’s more about knowing how to deal with the foes in your path than it is about the actual stealth – try to sneak around everything and you’ll never finish in time.
