The first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the second risky film from Sony in 2018, the first being the Venom solo movie starring Tom Hardy. Both films performed extremely well for different reasons. Venom made what you can quantify as a boat-load of money at the box office during its run ($856 million worldwide, to be more specific). The movie did this despite split reviews from the general audience and critics.
Into the Spider-Verse, on the other hand, was adored by most audiences due to its animation style, unique versions of the Spidey character, its comedy, and a few heartfelt moments throughout the movie. The film brought in $375 million worldwide during its run. These are really good numbers, especially for an animated film, but Into the Spider-Verse had one thing over the other 2018 Sony hit. An Oscar trophy. Into the Spider-Verse won the academy award for Best Animated Film at the Oscars earlier this year.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who produced the first Spider-Verse film, will both return for the sequel.

As for what we could see in the sequel, there’s a chance Olivia Octavius (Doc Ock) could have a more pivotal role. Co-director Rodney Rothman told Total Film (via ScreenRant):
“In the end, we found the movie played fine without us tagging every single possible thing. But we definitely think of Liv as someone who is not gone from the story, and who in many ways, is our most powerful bad guy. She’s manipulating a lot of things to achieve her own grand ambitions.”
